Pulau Sabu juga dikenal dengan
sebutan Sawu atau Savu. Penduduk di pulau ini sendiri menyebut pulau mereka
dengan sebutan Rai Hawu yang artinya Tanah dari Hawu dan orang Sabu sendiri
menyebut dirinya dengan sebutan Do Hawu. Nama resmi yang digunakan pemerintah
setempat adalah Sabu. Masyarakat Sabu menerangkan bahwa nama pulau itu berasal
dari nama Hawu Ga yakni nama salah satu leluhur mereka yang dianggap mula-mula
mendatangi pulau tersebut. Berikut

oleh pemerintah setempat. Kabupaten Sabu Raijua adalah salah satu kabupaten di
Provinsi Nusa Tenggara Timur, Indonesia. Kabupaten ini diresmikan oleh Menteri
Dalam Negeri Indonesia, Mardiyanto pada 29 Oktober 2008 sebagai hasil pemekaran
dariKabupaten Kupang.
